When it comes to skincare that nurtures and protects, sunscreen is your most powerful daily essential. It’s not just a summer thing or beach day add on, it’s a year-round ritual that safeguards your skin from premature aging, inflammation, hyperpigmentation, and serious concerns like skin cancer. If you’re cultivating skin that radiates health, SPF is your non-negotiable glow partner.
In this guide, we’ll break down why sunscreen matters, how to choose the right type for your skin, and sunscreen myths to better equip you with the tools needed to protect your skin.
Why Sunscreen Matters (Even on Cloudy Days)
Even when the sun is hiding, UV rays are not. UV rays can cause an increased risk of skin cancer, not to mention premature aging! UVA rays penetrate deeply, accelerating skin aging, while UVB rays are responsible for sunburn. Both types contribute to DNA damage in your skin cells. Daily SPF is your everyday shield against premature aging, dark spots, inflammation, and long-term skin damage. SPF should be part of the foundation of your daily skin care. Without it, topicals and treatments won't work as effectively.
Even indoors or on overcast days, UV rays can pass through windows and cloud cover. The result? Cumulative skin damage that may not show immediately but builds over time. That’s why daily application is key, no matter the weather or season.
Chemical vs. Mineral Sunscreen: What’s the Difference?
Chemical and mineral sunscreens are both excellent at protecting our skin with pros and cons to each.
| Pros | Cons |
Chemical Sunscreen | · Lightweight and sheer · Absorbs UV · Often better under makeup · Less of a white cast · Requires less product for similar coverage to mineral · Many formulas (not all) are water and sweat resistant | · Needs 20-30 minutes to activate after applying · May irritate sensitive skin · Can sting eyes during physical activity or swimming · Degrades easier than mineral |
Mineral (Physical) Sunscreen | · Often better for sensitive skin · Less irritating · Reflects UV · Starts working immediately · Broad spectrum protection · Stable, formula doesn’t degrade easily | · May leave a white cast · May feel thicker and chalky · Can rub off more easily with water or sweat · Harder to layer under makeup · Can rub off and leave marks on dark clothing |
Go for SPF 30 or higher every day. Apply generously, reapply every 2 hours if outside, and cover your ears, neck, and chest. It’s not just about the number, it’s about consistency.

Sunscreens come in many different forms including stick, powder, spray, and cream. I love using a chemical, cream sunscreen in the morning under my makeup before work. I bring a mineral sunscreen stick with me to reapply during the day because it is easier to travel with, less messy, and fast to apply during my busy day! Whatever form you choose, just remember to stay consistent with it.
How to Layer Sunscreen Into Your Routine
Sunscreen can easily be added to your current morning routing. Find a formula that you enjoy and add it as a last step to your skin care but before your make up.
General steps:
Cleanse
Mist or tone
Serum
Moisturizer
Sunscreen (always last)
Some sunscreens can double up as your morning moisturizer. Chemical sunscreens have come a long way from the large bottle of goop we used to take to the beach! Many formulas are now designed to be used in place of your morning moisturizer and some come tinted for light coverage instead of your BB cream.
If you have particularly dry skin, you may still find you need a moisturizer before your sunscreen. Opt for moisturizers and sunscreens with similar formulas to prevent the dreaded pilling! Oil based with oil based and water based with water based!
Myths About Sunscreen
MYTH: “I don’t need it if my makeup has SPF.”
Truth: Most makeup doesn’t contain nearly enough SPF to provide full protection and we rarely apply it in thick enough layers. 2 finger's worth of sunscreen is recommended underneath your makeup. Chemical sunscreens come in light formulas that can be sheer and undetectable under makeup.
MYTH: “I have melanin, I don’t burn.”
Truth: Everyone, no matter the skin tone can be affected by the sun's harmful UVs. Darker skin may not show signs of damage as easily as lighter skin but it still needs protection.
MYTH: “Sunscreen causes acne.”
Truth: Some formulas may cause irritation, just like any other skincare product and not all sunscreens are created equal. Look for non-comedogenic, fragrance-free formulas, especially mineral sunscreens, which are less likely to clog pores or cause irritation.
MYTH: “You don't need sunscreen on cloudy days.”
Truth: Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds. Even on overcast or rainy days, your skin is still exposed to damaging UVA rays, which are responsible for premature aging. Sunscreen is a year-round ritual, not just for sunny days.
MYTH: “You only need to apply sunscreen once per day.”
Truth: Sunscreen wears off after a few hours, especially with sweating, sun exposure, or touching your face. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors, and consider SPF touch-up mists or powders for ease.
