Honey is delicious. That is no doubt! I love it on toast and on pancakes and in my tea and with basically everything you can think of. Honey holds a dear place in my heart and I love going to the farmer's market to pick some up. It's important to me to support the local farmers and creators of my home.
Let me tell you 5 reasons why local honey is the absolute best.
1. Local Honey is Unpasteurized
Getting your honey directly from the people who keep bees is an excellent way to get high quality, unpasteurized, tasty honey! Honey is antifungal, antibacterial, and contains antioxidants that can help promote a healthier body. It has been used as a traditional medicine for sore throats and as an antimicrobial on wounds. I love adding honey to my tea or, if I'm feeling cheeky, eating a spoonful of it when I start to feel a tickle in my throat.
2. Local Honey Supports Pollination and Wild Plant Populations
Bees pollinate! That's no secret. Many plants, wild and farmed, rely on the local insect population to help them produce fruit and flowers for years to come. Without bees we would be in serious trouble with many plants struggling to stay alive. Supporting your local apiary keeps them in business and keeps those bees pollinating the plants around them. Bees will fly as far as 8 miles collecting nectar and pollinating wind flowers, crop fields, and gardens.
3. Local Honey Supports the Economy
When we buy from local producers we are directly supporting the businesses within our community. Instead of giving my money to large corporations with honey from other countries, I would rather know where the honey comes from and know that my money is going to support the growth of local business.
4. Local Honey Provides Jobs and Supports Farmers
Supporting local businesses helps them to grow! A growing business will naturally need more employees and family run businesses provide jobs for community members. Supporting these farms tells them that 'yes! we do want more!
5. Local Honey Tastes Damn Good
My fifth, and final, reason local honey is the absolute best? It's so so so soooooo good. The flavour changes depending on what the buzzy bees feed on. One apiary may be clover based while another wildflower based. Flavour also changes depending on the season, the weather, and the overall health of the bees! Honey comes in so many different delicious varieties and some can only be found locally!
Those are my reasons I love local honey. Drop a comment and let me know why you love honey!
